It seemed like you got it all covered here. Well, you might want to add, when making video calls make sure that you're properly dressed - not in an immodest manner as people on the other end might post crappy photos of you on the net with all the Photoshop works in it. It would also be great to keep your Skype account updated to the latest version and familiarize yourself as too how it works so you wouldn't be crippling around it when the video is rolling.

The thing is in few places, at least in Quebec that even if you have enough money, you can't.

There is a law that make illegal private insurance.

And not all surgeries or care are legally available by private clinics.

If you unlucky, you have to be mistreated by unionized workers in soviet Hospital or die in waiting list.

I think that unions are a separate issue from state-provided services. And if you can afford private healthcare, you can afford it in either the US or Canada.

Skype's rivals might have an opportunity, but do they have the brand recognition to leverage that? My gut says no. I think we'd need a big new entry to the market with a killer app for Skype to start feeling the heat.

Skype should wake up quickly, they been/are too arrogant.

Their luck is that the product is needed by the customers
and it is really doesn’t matter who is the CEO and who are the executives, anything
they done after the founder left was really not making any change. Skype
software is spread from user to user (viral marketing) and because they have so
many users, no software competitor can beat them so far.

But luck is over, in the battle on “chat users”, facebook
(probably) become the biggest winner, most of Skype users I been chat with them
been move their chat to facebook platform.

If mobile carriers will make the voice calls free worldwide
(it can happen, it is reducing the need for more 3G 4G antenna and this
companies are very organise) then Skype is done, Skype need the money of the
internationals calls to survive.

If they will open their eyes they can see they have a big
and free P2P network that can be use for so many things. they can do so many
things….

Microsoft pulled their support for the BSA when it "commended" SOPA. Its official stance on the issue, though, was "no comment". That is just the most recent example of how Microsoft is studiedly (and wisely) uncontroversial in its politics. I doubt that Skype will suddenly find its political voice any time soon.

I'm prepared to be surprised, though. Skype have made some odd decisions in the past.

If Skype had been blended into eBay, would anyone have ever bothered to use it? Maybe it's just me, but I've never found a need for real time voice communication with anyone I've ever traded with over eBay.

Better than it blended at eBay. Better than it would have blended had they been bought out by some other equally bizarre purchaser such as a supermarket or a travel agency. If anything, Microsoft is probably the least worst company that could have acquired them.

Skype seems to take cross platform compatibility more seriously than Microsoft tends to. It would be a sad day if "Slync" drops Linux support or non Windows Phone phones

The failure of the platform strategy, SkypeKit, etc is JC's failure. He had many years to get it working. His departure is no loss for Skype.

if you want to kill skype, that's the best idea.

I was born and raise in Canada, precisely in Quebec, the most socialist province.
And I know the damage of unions.

I left the country at 34 with my wife and my company because of the country highly socialist tendencies.
I wanted freedom of choice.

In US, you do not have a clue of what is it to wait after the government for everything.
In Montreal, if you go to an hospital, you can wait in the emergency room for more than 36 hours.
So much people dies in waiting list or because of poor services.
ALL BECAUSE OF THE STATE AND UNIONS OF DOCTORS AND NURSES!

We use Skype for our call center because it is cheaper than using local LAN lines. Skype has integrated the ability to communicate over the internet for free as long as you have a connection. I am not sure by the titles of increasing travel?

As a California based Skype employee who is currently (and frequently) traveling 10 time zones to be with my Estonian colleagues, I agree with you. Working cross borders requires occasional face to face, so travel needs change. Less commuting, more telecommuting, and more distant travels. At the same time I leverage business travel to visit distant friends that I keep up with on Skype and FB. As the world gets smaller thanks to the social web, I want to travel more, not less.

In the running world (some call it Community) we have a saying that "Running is better than sex!". But reading your list of online activities makes me think that modern species are going through life by ONLY thinking of sex. I am running One time a day and that does it for that day. If I would think of running (or sex) all day long I would have no time to finish my daily dose of work. So does it at least sound. Without knowing the study you mentioned I am disputing the accuracy of it and even pretend that the results are med to serve a hidden agenda - e.g. change of peoples mind, power etc. Anyway Phil I like the article and it makes me think of life and hopefully my reflections to it got a new kick.

Hello:

I'm collecting a few quotes from your own post and can clearly rationalize that according to the Halacha, a Skyped minyan may count very well.

1. LAW:
"The Code of Jewish Law [Orach Chayim 55] says:
14] If a person is standing outside the synagogue and there is a window, even if it is several stories high and smaller than four cubits [six feet] wide, if he shows his face (in the window) he may be counted."
So, for the purpose of minyan, one may be outside and still count, as long as there is a "spiritual connection."

2. PHYSICAL PRESENCE:
There are many synagogues dispersed out there in the world, where the facility is big but there is barely or no minyan. And when there is, the individuals sit several rows from each other, making their "physical presence feel distinct." And at the end of the service, many go about their individual way without even saying bye. So, accurately speaking, the "elbow-rubbing fellowship" is not exactly what counts for the purpose of the minyan.

3. SPIRITUAL INTENTION - KAVANAH:
Sometimes one or more participant(s) in a minyan may be "physically present," but unfortunately, for some reason may not have the full Kavanah, which makes the "physical presence" completely useless.

4. SPIRITUAL CONNECTION:
For the purpose of minyan, "the collection of souls in one place brings the light of G-d’s spirit on that place." Since undeniably G-d's spirit is everywhere, that "place" does not have to be a "physical place," it can clearly be a "spiritual place" with "spiritual intention - kavanah" that enables the "spiritual connection" with G-d.

5. SPIRITUAL PRESENCE:
Therefore, a Skype window can impart the power to restore the spiritual connection with one condition:
The participants on both sides must be "spiritually present" in the same Tfila with full Kavanah.

6. LOGICAL AND TIMELESS:
Judaism survived for so long under the worst conditions only because it is logical and timeless. So, let's give Judaism the full respect it deserves and continue keeping it logical and timeless.

Skype's product is fine for friends and families to keep in touch for free. Its fine for small distributed teams to quickly touch base once in a while -- all the stuff the free service is fine for. But its horrible call quality, dreadful audio lag, miserable screen share making it embarrassing and impossible for use for any serious work -- all the stuff they want you to pay for.

I know this because I've wasted a few dollars on their "premium" services. I won't repeat that mistake.

What are these 1,000 employees doing anyway?
